Amara Okafor

VP of Engineering

Leading high-performance engineering teams building the next generation of developer infrastructure. Passionate about mentorship, open source, and engineering culture.

My Journey

I started my career as a backend engineer writing Java microservices at a fintech startup in Lagos. Over the next twelve years, I moved through individual contributor, tech lead, and engineering manager roles before stepping into my current position as VP of Engineering.

Today I lead a 60-person engineering organization across four product teams. My focus is on engineering culture, technical strategy, and building systems that let talented engineers do their best work.

Leadership Philosophy

I believe great engineering leadership is about removing friction, not adding process. My teams operate with high autonomy within clear guardrails — shared architectural principles, well-defined service boundaries, and a strong culture of code review and knowledge sharing.

Areas of Focus

  • Platform Engineering — Internal developer platforms that accelerate delivery
  • Engineering Culture — Hiring practices, onboarding, and continuous learning programs
  • Technical Strategy — Multi-year roadmaps that balance innovation with reliability
  • Open Source — Contributing back to the ecosystem and sponsoring maintainers

Impact

Under my leadership, we've reduced deployment cycle time from two weeks to under four hours, improved engineering NPS from 32 to 78, and grown the team from 15 to 60 engineers while maintaining a voluntary attrition rate below 5%.

The best engineering teams aren't the ones with the most talented individuals — they're the ones where talented individuals make each other better.

Beyond Work

I'm an active mentor through several organizations focused on increasing representation of African engineers in the global tech industry. I also run a YouTube channel with over 40,000 subscribers where I share candid insights about engineering leadership, career growth, and the realities of scaling engineering organizations.
